She was elected to the post by a majority of votes by the MPs present at the meeting of the lower house today. The proposal seeking election of Rana to the post of Deputy Speaker received 166 votes. Likewise, 97 votes were cast against the proposal. A total of 264 votes were cast while one MP did not vote. A member of parliament representing the Rastriya Swatantra Party, Rana was a common candidate of the ruling alliance.
