Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian made the remarks during a regular news briefing in response to reports that US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had outlined plans for the “economic asphyxiation” of Iran and warned countries against failing to join Washington’s sanctions campaign. Lin said economic pressure and “maximum pressure” would not resolve disputes but could instead intensify tensions, increase spillover risks and disrupt the global economic and financial system. He said the immediate priority should be to reduce tensions and return to dialogue and negotiations as soon as possible. Lin added that China’s cooperation with Iran is conducted within international law and should not be disrupted. He said China was closely monitoring developments and would take necessary measures to protect its legitimate rights and interests.
