Kathmandu [Nepal], September 2 – United States and Iran have exchanged fresh attacks with Washington launching airstrikes against Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) positions and Tehran responding with missile and drone strikes targeting US military facilities in Iraq, Jordan and Bahrain.
Iran’s Red Crescent said at least four people including a child were killed and more than 50 others injured after shrapnel from a US missile struck a house hosting a wedding ceremony in Sirik, southern Iran.
The IRGC said it subsequently fired ballistic missiles at a US Marine base in Jordan. Jordan said its air defenses intercepted 10 of 13 missiles launched from Iran while three fell in remote areas. No casualties were reported.
Iran also attempted missile and drone attacks in Kuwait and Bahrain, according to the reports.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the latest strikes against Iran began at noon Tuesday US Eastern Time (1600 GMT) and were completed by Wednesday morning. It said the operation targeted IRGC bases following an alleged attempt by the group to target commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian state media reported missile or other projectile impacts in Chabahar, Konarak and at an airport in Jiroft. Explosions were also heard on Qeshm Island and in Bandar Abbas.
US President Donald Trump warned that Washington would respond with attacks at an even “harsher and higher level” if Iran retaliated again.
US Navy Capt. Tim Hawkins speaking for CENTCOM, said the US military was aware of Iranian state media reports about the incident in Sirik.
The latest exchanges signal a renewed escalation in the US-Iran conflict.
