Nepal PM wins floor test, unveils government strategy plan 


Kathmandu- On Sunday, Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli disclosed the midnight agreement made with the Nepali Congress on July 1 to establish a new coalition government under his leadership. Oli won the confidence vote with 188 votes in favor in the 275-member House of Representatives.

After a week in office, PM Oli presented his proposal for a confidence vote. Out of 263 lawmakers present, 188 voted in favor, 74 opposed, and 1 abstained.

During the floor test, Oli revealed the seven-point agreement between his party, CPN-UML, and the Nepali Congress.

Among the top being the power sharing deal, PM Oli announced in the parliament that he will hand over the power to Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba after two years and will head the government until the 2027 election. Deuba last served as PM in 2021.

Secondly, form a national consensus government under Article 76(2) of the constitution, involving other political parties as well, to protect national interests, control corruption, improve governance, accelerate development activities, and ensure political stability.

Thirdly reviewing the strengths, weaknesses, and complexities observed in the course of implementing the constitution, and will focus on amending the constitution and enacting related laws in order to ensure political stability.

Fourth, addressing the prolonged economic slowdown, preparing a reliable business environment, and rejuvenating economic activities including encouraging both domestic and foreign investments to create sufficient and dignified employment opportunities within the country.

Fifth, Preparing common minimum programs to protect national interests, ensure good governance by ending corruption, determine the basis of the national consensus government, and run the government on the same basis.

Sixth, forming provincial governments according to the spirit of the national consensus government, accelerating development activities at the provincial and local levels based on public sentiment.

On July 15, Oli assumed the position of prime minister based on the 166 legislators’ signatures.

The ruling coalition led by the CPN-UML Party which includes parties like the, Nepali Congress Janmat Party,Janata Samajwadi Party, Nagarik Unmukti  Party, Lokatantrik Samajwadi Party, and Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal, supported Oli during the floor test.

Among these, Nagarik Unmukti Party Janmat Party and upendra yadav led Janta Samajbadi Party Nepal are not part of the federal goverment.

The CPN-Maoist Center, CPN-Unified Socialist, Rashtriya Swatantra Party, and Rastriya Prajatantra Party were among those that rejected Oli.

On Monday, the seasoned 72-year-old Communist leader took the oath of office as prime minister of the Himalayan nation for the fourth time. Along with the other twenty-one members of the Cabinet, he was administered the oath of office and secrecy.

A prime minister must secure a vote of confidence within 30 days of taking office, according to the Nepali Constitution.
