Govt restricts poultry imports amid reports of bird flu cases in India

Agriculture and Livestock Ministry asks people to remain cautious


KATHMANDU – The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock has urged people to stay alert in the wake of reports about confirmed cases of bird flu in India.

Amid reports of confirmed cases of bird flu in India, the ministry has urged people to become careful in Terai areas.Sending a letter to various seven custom offices, the ministry has urged them to remain vigilant to control possible impot of bird flu from India.

According to Shree Ram Ghimire, spokesperson at the ministry, the ministry has directed custom and quarantine offices to restrict imports of poultry products from India.

“There is a risk of bird flu entering Nepal from Himachal state in India. Keeping in view the risk of outbreak of bird flu infection, we have restricted poultry imports from Himachal state as a measure to curb the spread of bird flu,” said Spokesperson Ghimire.

According to Ghimire, chief district officers in Terai districts also have been asked to become cautious about the possible outbreak.

“There is a chance of poultry entering Nepal outside the custom points as there are open borders with India. We have directed CDOs to remain vigilant about such imports. CDOs have the authority to cull or destroy the smuggled chicken or poultry,” he added.
