KATHMANDU – The UK government has announced that it would provide 2 million doses of Covid vaccines to Nepal.
Writing a tweet on Thursday, British Ambassador to Nepal Nicola Pollitt said that the British government would provide more than 2 million doses of Covid vaccines to Nepal.
She said that vaccines would arrive in Nepal next month. According to British Ambassador Pollitt, the British government is providing vaccines to Nepal as part of its £550 million support to Covax.
Covax is a mechanism co-led by Gavi, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and WHO to distribute Covid-19 doses fairly around the world.
In her tweet, British Ambassador Pollitt said that the vaccines will be distributed in Nepal in collaboration with the Government of Nepal, WHO and UNICEF.
“I am glad that 20 million doses of Covid vaccines are arriving in Nepal through the support of nearly Rs 70.5 billion(£550) by British government to Covax. The vaccines will be distributed in collaboration with the Government of Nepal @mohpnep, @WHONepal and @UNICEF_Nepal. #VaccinesForAll,” read her tweet sent in Nepali.
Along with the UK, three countries have announced that they would provide Covid vaccines to Nepal. While India has already sent 1 million Covid vaccines manufactured by Serum Institute of India, China last week announced that it would give 300,000 doses of vaccines developed by Sinopharm to Nepal.
Nepal is currently administering the India-gifted vaccines to the frontline responders in the first phase.
