As intra party rift widens, PM Oli instructs provincial leaders to remain prepared for ‘alternative’ course

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has instructed provincial committee level leaders to remain standby, citing that he has been cornered in the party.

Addressing leaders of the provincial committees via Zoom on Wednesday, he said that some leaders in the party have railed against him by forming a group.

He, however, did not clarify what he wanted them to do by remaining standby.

Vowing to make efforts to protect the party unity until the last minute, he told the provincial leaders to be prepared for an alternative course if there is no consensus in the party.

“Even former UML colleagues are against me. They have spread rumors about a splitting party. I will fight until the last moment to protect party unity,” a provincial leader quoted PM Oli as saying.

“There have been efforts to make me unsuccessful even the government has been performing well. If there is no consensus, I have to take any action. All comrades should remain prepared for that,” he added.

Prime Minister Oli said that his own party has remained unsupportive to the government rather than the opposition party.

Similarly, Deputy Prime Minister Ishwor Pokharel said that internal disputes in the Karnali province have widened the intra party rift.

He criticized Karnali’s Chief Minister Mahendra Bahadur Shahi for sacking the chief whip of the province.
