Tikapur carnage: High Court seconds district court’s verdict on Reshamlal Chaudhary


KATHMANDU – The High Court, Dipayal, has sentenced life time imprisonment to Member of Parliament (MP) Reshamlal Chaudhary on his connection to Tikapur carnage.

In a hearing taken place till Thursday night, the High Court seconded the verdict of the Kailali District Court to slap life imprisonment on MP Chaudhary and seven other persons.

Laxman Tharu has also got the life imprisonment. Prior to this, the Kailali District Court had released Tharu on bail.Eight police personnel including a Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and a toddler were killed in a demonstration staged on August 17, 2017 in Tikapur of Kailali demanding a Tharuhat Province.

A division bench of Judges Tek Narayan Kunwar and Sitaram Mandal handed down the verdict to lawmaker Chaudhary and another Tharuhat leader Tharu, the masterminds of Tikapur carnage.

The other convicts in the case are Hari Narayan Chaudhary, Pradip Chaudhary, Bir Bahadur Chaudhary, Rajesh Chaudhary, Sitaram Chaudhary and Gangaram Chaudhary.

Lawmaker Chaudhary had appealed to the High Court after the District Court handed down a life imprisonment on him in accordance with Chapter 13 (3) of General Code.
