KATHMANDU – Province 1 is holding its meeting of the Provincial Assembly today.
The government of Province 1 is in crisis after a rival faction of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and Madhav Kumar Nepal started a process to register a no-confidence motion against the government.
Earlier on January 20, the meeting of the Provincial Assembly ended in three minutes. House Speaker Pradeep Kumar Bhandari has called a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee prior to the meeting of the Provincial Assembly scheduled for 2 PM.
The ruling party lawmakers are likely to disrupt the proceedings of the Assembly if the middle way is not found in the meeting of the Business Advisory Committee.
The ruling faction of the NCP led by KP Shatma Oli has been arguing that 15 lawmakers, who have been suspended by the party, should not be allowed to attend the meeting. They have warned that they would not allow the Assembly to convene if those lawmakers facing action are allowed to enter the meeting.
Buddhi Kumar Rajbhandari, the chief whip of NCP for Province 1, said that the lawmakers of the ruling party would stand up to express their objection if suspended lawmakers are allowed to attend the meeting.
Jiwan Ghimire, a lawmaker close to Prachanda-led NCP, said that as all lawmakers have attended the previous meeting, the issue has already been settled.
Earlier on December 27 last year, 37 lawmakers close to Prachanda-led NCP had registered a no-confidence motion against Chief Minister Sherdhan Rai. Five lawmakers have already withdrawn their signatures from the no-confidence motion. Chief Minister Rai suspended 15 lawmakers from the party on December 31 alleging them of violating party disciplines.
