Bagmati Provincial Assembly Operating from a Canteen

KATHMANDU – The Gen Z movement has rendered the Secretariat of the Bagmati Provincial Assembly nonfunctional.

During the protests and clashes on September 9 (Bhadra 24), both the new and old assembly buildings were vandalized and set on fire, resulting in the complete destruction of the infrastructure.

Currently, the employees of the Provincial Assembly Secretariat are delivering services from a canteen due to the lack of a building.

According to an official of the Secretariat, everything from chairs to essential office materials has become unusable. “There is no place to hold meetings; employees are forced to work from the canteen,” he said.

Devendra Sapkota, the legal officer and spokesperson of the Office of the Provincial Chief, informed that both the newly constructed building—built at a cost of around Rs 122.9 million—and the old building were burned down, causing damage worth approximately Rs 300 million.

The new building, which was inaugurated only on August 11 (Saun 27), had hosted just four meetings before it was completely destroyed.

According to the Provincial Assembly Secretariat, it is currently impossible to conduct assembly meetings. Both assembly and committee meetings have been postponed indefinitely, and staff are working from temporary locations to provide services.
