Kathmandu – Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology on Sunday issued a forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall in four provinces over the next three days, warning of a heightened risk of flash floods in parts of eastern Nepal.
According to the weather reports issued on Sunday afternoon, the Meteorological Forecasting Division said isolated areas in the hills and plains of Koshi Province are likely to receive heavy rainfall on Sunday.
The rainfall is expected to intensify on Monday with heavy to very heavy rain forecast at a few places in Koshi Province. Isolated areas of Madhesh, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces are also likely to experience heavy rainfall.
Similar conditions are expected to persist on Tuesday. The division said a few places in the hills and Tarai of Koshi Province could receive heavy to very heavy rain while isolated locations in Madhesh and Gandaki provinces are also at risk of heavy downpours.
The weather office has urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert, as the continuous downpour could trigger flash floods, landslides and river swelling.
It also issued a moderate flash flood warning for small rivers and streams flowing through Jhapa, Ilam, Panchthar, Taplejung and Sankhuwasabha districts and surrounding areas. Water levels in these rivers are expected to rise significantly due to heavy rainfall.
Authorities have advised people living in low-lying and flood-prone areas as well as those travelling near rivers and streams to exercise caution and follow updates issued by weather and disaster management agencies.
