Kathmandu [Nepal], July 14 – Nepal recorded 73 monsoon related disaster incidents across the country in the past 24 hours leaving two people dead and one missing. The persistent rainfall triggered landslides, floods and other emergencies according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).
The incidents reported between 8:45 am Monday and 8:45 am Tuesday. The incidents include landslides, floods, continuous rainfall, snakebites, wild animal attacks and a fire highlighting the growing impact of the active monsoon season.
Landslides accounted for the largest share of disasters with 40 incidents reported across 26 districts. Two people identified as 46-year-old Mandir Saud and 76-year-old Lal Bahadur Saud were killed after being trapped in a landslide in Sannitriveni Rural Municipality-6 of Kalikot district.
Floods triggered 14 incidents in 10 districts. One person remains missing after being swept away along with his scooter in Makawanpur district while another person sustained injury. Authorities also recorded 12 incidents caused by incessant rainfall in eight districts four snakebite cases, three wild animal attacks and one fire.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology said rainfall was recorded at 278 of the country’s 380 monitoring stations during the same period including 297 automated stations. The highest rainfall measuring 319.8 millimetres was recorded at the Narayani Field Office station in Chitwan. Three nearby stations also reported more than 200 mm of rain while 26 monitoring stations nationwide received over 100 mm.
Authorities have urged residents particularly those living near rivers, streams and landslide prone areas to remain alert as continued heavy rainfall could trigger further flooding, landslides and rising river levels in the coming days.
