India Army Chief receives Nepal’s honorary general rank


Kathmandu [Nepal], August 17 – Indian Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth has been conferred the honorary rank of General of the Nepali Army continuing a decades-old military tradition between Nepal and India.

President Ram Chandra Paudel conferred the honorary rank on General Seth during a special ceremony at Sheetal Niwas on Monday.

Nepal and India have followed the tradition of conferring the honorary rank of General on each other’s army chiefs since 1950 reflecting the longstanding military ties between the two neighbouring countries.

Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav, Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal, Chief of Army Staff General Ashok Raj Sigdel and senior Nepali Army officials attended the ceremony. Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava was also present.

General Seth arrived in Kathmandu on Sunday afternoon for a three-day official visit to Nepal at the invitation of General Sigdel.

During his visit, Seth handed over military and medical supplies to the Nepali Army at a ceremony at the Army Headquarters. He also planted trees at the headquarters as part of his official engagements.

Earlier, Seth held a courtesy meeting with General Sigdel, laid a wreath at the Military Pavilion in Tundikhel and received a guard of honour at the Army Headquarters.

His visit comes amid continued military and institutional cooperation between Nepal and India.
