KATHMANDU –  Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Rekha Sharma, has, on the occasion of the World Environment Day, underlined the need of public awareness at a wider-level for the conservation of environment.

In a message of best wishes on the occasion today, the Minister said more awareness-raising campaigns were necessary to increase awareness for environment conservation. She sought the increased role of communications and information technology in efforts for protecting the environment.

“Environmental awareness is vital for coping with challenges for environment pollution increasing worldwide and the role of mass communications is necessary to raise awareness about indispensable aspects of environment and the need of protecting it as a whole through a sustainable approach,” the Minister said.

Minister Sharma reminded of a grave challenge to environment caused by increasing plastic pollution when the World Environment Day-2023 is dedicated to finding ‘solutions to plastic pollution’.

“Practices to discourage the use of plastic, its recycle, and reuse and to ban its use are underway,” the Minister mentioned in the message, urging the mass to refrain themselves from using plastic. She pressed an idea of launching an extreme public awareness against the plastic use and its consequences.

“The Constitution has guaranteed to the citizen’s right to live in a clean and healthy environment,” the Minister stated in the message adding that the government was committed to bringing this right into practice. As she said, combined efforts from the government, non-government, private and the community level are necessary to protect the environment sustainably.
