Nepal and Israel sign agreement on labour, agriculture

KATHMANDU : Nepal and Israel have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish an Agricultural Center of Excellence in Nepal. As per the agreement, such centres would each be established in seven states of the country.

Nepali ambassador to Israel Dr Anjan Shakya and Foreign Affairs Minister of Israel E. Gabi Ashkenazi signed the pact on Wednesday. Similarly, the agreement regarding employing Nepali caregivers to nursing sectors, including hospitals, nursing homes, elderly homes and daycare centers, of Israel was also signed. With this, Nepali migrant workers would receive equal facility and treatment as enjoyed by Israeli citizens.

A cabinet meeting on Tuesday decided to sign a labor agreement with Israel and authorize Nepali Ambassador to Israel, Shakya, to sign the labor pact. With the signing of the MoU, the Israeli labour market has been opened for Nepali youths. Nepali workers will receive employment opportunities in the caregiving, agriculture, hotel and restaurant, construction, among other sectors in Israel.

However, the recruitment of workers will begin only after signing the ‘Implementation Protocol’ for each sector, the Nepali Embassy in Tel Aviv stated. The Embassy stated that the implementation protocol regarding the recruitment of Nepali workers in Israel’s nursing sector will be signed as soon as an agreement has been reached after holding discussions at various levels.

Israel’s ambassador to Nepal and related Nepali officials will sign the protocol to this end in Kathmandu. Five hundred Nepalis will go to Israel for employment soon after this.
