Women’s participation in Nepal encouraging: Deputy Speaker

KATHMANDU – House of Representatives’ Deputy Speaker Indira Rana Magar has said women’s participation in the State organs in Nepal is encouraging.

In her address to a programme organised here today by the Birtamod-based Birata Lady Jaycees today, the Deputy Speaker was of the opinion that women’s participation in the State bodies was more encouraging than in the situation in big and developed nations.

“The representation of women in majority of developed countries is five to 25 percent. In Nepal, the Constitution has guaranteed 33 percent in the State bodies and this must be increased to 50 percent.”

According to her, but still we have to go a long way for the improvement of women’s rights and to achieve gender equality. Underlining the need of promoting the participations of women in each sector, she underlined the need of switching to actions against anomalies.

Sexuality, disability and geography should be also guidelines for the women’s participation in the State bodies, according to the Deputy Speaker, who assesses the women’s presence in politics as ‘rubber stamps’.

On the occasion, pilot Jina Ligden was honoured with the ‘Outstanding Woman Honor’ for this year towards the technical genre, according to Jaycees chair Sangita Giri. The organisation honours a woman from Jhapa with special contribution to the respective field each year on the occasion of the Women’s Day since 2021.
