PM Oli calls Constitutional Council meeting for tomorrow

Meeting going to be convened after the House Speaker refused to conduct parliamentary hearings on nominees picked by Constitutional Council for appointments

KATHMANDU – Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has called a meeting of the Constitutional Council.

The Constitutional Council meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday at 11 am, according to the National Assembly Chairman Ganesh Prasad Timilsina’s Press Coordinator Ashok Paudel.

The National Assembly Chairman is a member of the Constitutional Council.

The recommendations made by the Constitutional Council for the appointments on various posts were sent back by Speaker of the House of Representatives Agni Sapkota.

Earlier in December last year, the government had amended the Constitutional Council Act through an ordinance to allow the Council to convene its meeting if majority members are present.

After House Speaker Sapkota and main opposition party leader Sher Bahadur Deuba boycotted the meeting, theCouncil meeting held of majority members held on December 15 decided to make recommendations for the appointments on various constitutional bodies.

Citing that the Parliamentary Hearings Committee cannot conduct hearings of the nominees picked by the Constitutional Council after the dissolution of the House, House Speaker Sapkota had sent back the original copy of the letter sent by the government asking the House to convene the hearings.

The nominees picked by the Council are appointed to the respective posts only after the parliamentary hearings, according to a constitutional provision.

National Assembly Chairman Timilsina had criticized the decision of the House Speaker to send back the recommendations.
