Kathmandu – Days of continuous rainfall have heightened flood risks across 10 districts in Nepal on Wednesday with landslides also blocking seven key highway sections in different parts of the country.
According to the Flood Forecasting Division, water levels in small rivers flowing through Ilam, Jhapa, Tehrathum, Panchthar, Dhankuta, Saptari, Sunsari, Morang, Doti, Dadeldhuraand surrounding districts are expected to rise significantly creating a moderate risk of flash floods.
Persistent rainfall has also disrupted road connectivity in Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Karnali provinces.
In Koshi province the Mechi highway has been completely blocked at Rajduwali in Ilamafter continuous rain damaged the road. The Khurkot-Nepalthok section of the highway remains closed while the Kulekhani-Fakhel-Pharping road in Makwanpur has also been shut due to ongoing road maintenance work in the Indrasarovar area.
Meanwhile, the Kanti Lokpath in Pangdur, Lalitpur has been blocked by a landslide. In Gandaki province landslides at Baiseri and Ghumaune Bhir in Myagdi have cut off the Beni-Jomsom road. Flooding has also disrupted traffic along the Bheri corridor in Rukum west of Karnali province.
The authorities have urged people living near rivers and those travelling through the affected areas to remain alert as monsoon conditions continue.
