Minister Tumbahamphe indicates provincial assemblies also could be dissolved

Statement of a federal minister about the possibility of dissolution of provincial assemblies comes after ruling party lawmakers in some provinces start process of no-confidence motion against Chief Ministers

KATHMANDU: Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation Shiva Maya Tumbahamphe has indicated that the provincial assemblies also could get dissolved.

Stating that the dissolution of the House of Representatives in the center has caused ripples in various provinces, Minister Tumbahamphe on Monday said that provincial assemblies also could get dissolved.

Minister Tumbahamphe was speaking at a press meet in Biratnagar.

The statement of the federal minister comes in the wake of escalating tension in the NCP that have prompted provincial lawmakers to initiate no-confidence motions against their own Chief Ministers.

This division among provincial lawmakers reflects the crisis in the ruling NCP caused by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s sudden decision to dissolve the House of Representatives on December 20.

During the press meet, Minister Tumbahamphe, who had led the Ministry of Law, also defended the Prime Minister’s move and claimed it to be in line with the constitution.

She said that provincial governments also have the authority to dissolve their respective provincial assemblies.
