National Assembly by-election in Bagmati Province tomorrow


KATHMANDU – Voting is taking place for the vacant post of member of National Assembly from the Bagmati Province from 9 am to 3 pm tomorrow.

All preparations related to the election security, health safety protocols and other managerial aspects have been completed in connection with conducting the by-election in a free, fair, credible and dignified manner, Election Commission Nepal (ECN)’s spokesperson Raj Kumar Shrestha said.

There are 348 voters including 110 members of the Bagmati Province Assembly and 238 local representatives comprising the chiefs and deputy chiefs of the rural municipalities and the mayors and deputy mayors of municipalities under the Province.

The ECN said it was committed to and actively at work for making the by-election free and fair. The election is taking place as per the first-past-the-post election system through the electoral college.

The Election Commission has urged all the electors to participate in the voting. The ‘silent period’ as per the election code-of-conduct is already in force since 12 midnight of May 17. No electioneering and canvassing is allowed during the silent period.

Meanwhile, the District Covid-19 Crisis Management Centre, Makawanpur said that arrangements have been made for the accommodation and voting in line with the health safety protocols. Voting is taking place at the three polling booths set up at the Bhutandevi Secondary School at Hetauda Municipality-4, Makawanpur district.

Minister for Home Affairs Ram Bahadur Thapa from the ruling CPN(UM) and Dr Khimlal Devkota from the opposition alliance are contesting in the by-election.
