KATHMANDU – Portugal is set to open a diplomatic mission in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel announced that a diplomatic office will be established in Nepal’s capital. He shared this during a telephone conversation with Nepal’s newly appointed Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal, congratulating him on his new role.
During the call, the two ministers discussed bilateral relations. In response, Minister Khanal welcomed Portugal’s decision, describing it as a positive step that will further strengthen ties between Nepal and Portugal in the coming days.
Minister Khanal also urged his Portuguese counterpart to address humanitarian concerns related to Nepali citizens facing legal issues in Portugal.
According to a statement posted by Portugal’s Foreign Ministry on social media platform X, Minister Rangel congratulated Khanal on his appointment and announced the establishment of a consular office in Kathmandu. The move is seen as an investment in bilateral relations, including sectors such as tourism, agriculture, and technology.
Nepal has long been requesting Portugal to open an embassy. More than 60,000 Nepalis currently live in Portugal and have been facing difficulties due to the absence of a Portuguese diplomatic mission in Kathmandu.
