Parliamentary Committee Invites Complaints Against Chief Election Commissioner Nominee

Kathmandu- Nepal’s Parliamentary Hearing Committee has invited complaints against three nominees recommended for appointment as the country’s chief election commissioner and election commissioners.

In a public notice issued on Friday, the committee called on individuals to submit complaints within 10 days regarding the proposed appointments. Complaints may be filed in either Nepali or English language.
The nominees include Man Bahadur Karki, who has been recommended for the post of chief election commissioner, Dr Rajeev Subba of Kathmandu and Guru Prasad Wagle of Okhaldhunga who have been proposed as election commissioners.

The recommendations were made by the Constitutional Council during its meeting on July 3 chaired by Prime Minister Balendra Shah. The council forwarded the names for parliamentary hearing as part of the constitutional appointment process.

The Parliamentary Hearing Committee published the notice for the first time on July 10 inviting the public to register any objections or complaints against the nominees before the confirmation process moves forward.

Under Nepal’s constitutional framework nominees to key constitutional bodies are subject to parliamentary scrutiny before their appointments are endorsed. The hearing process allows lawmakers to review the qualifications conduct and suitability of the proposed candidates while also providing an opportunity for the public to raise documented concerns.

The committee is expected to proceed with hearings after the complaint submission period concludes.
