Heavy rain to hit Nepal, 35 districts including capital at high risk

Kathmandu [Nepal], July 13Nepal’s Flood Forecasting Division has warned of flood risks in 35 districts across the country on Monday with rivers and streams expected to swell amid continued rainfall.

According to the division Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur and Kavrepalanchok face the highest flood risk and have been placed under an orange alert indicating that river water levels are expected to exceed the warning threshold. Residents living near rivers and streams in these districts and surrounding areas have been urged to remain vigilant.

The division also forecast a significant rise in water levels and a moderate risk of flash floods in smaller rivers flowing through Panchthar, Ilam, Jhapa, Morang, Saptari, Sunsari, Bhojpur, Sankhuwasabha, Dolakha, Ramechhap, Sindhuli, Sindhupalchok, Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Lamjung, Tanahun, Makwanpur, Bara, Parsa, Rautahat, Chitwan, Nawalparasi East, Nawalparasi West, Palpa, Kaski, Parbat, Myagdi, Syangja and Kailali as well as nearby districts.

The warning comes as widespread rainfall continues across much of Nepal during the monsoon season.

The Meteorological Forecasting Division has forecast heavy rainfall at a few locations in the hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces. Heavy rain is also likely at one or two locations in the Tarai of Madhesh Province and the Tarai areas of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces as well as in the hilly and mountainous regions of Lumbini Province.

Authorities have advised residents particularly those living in flood-prone and riverbank areas to remain alert as weather conditions could lead to sudden flooding in vulnerable locations.
